FMV Uses COMSOFT Multilateration Surveillance System

German COMSOFT reports their recent deployment of several ADS-B sensors with multilateration capabilities throughout Swedish territory.

STOCKHOLM/SWEDEN, February 2009 The Swedish Defence Materiel Organisation FMV has taken into service four of COMSOFT's Quadrant ADS-B ground stations at various locations as well as the complementing multilateration controller, including a central control and monitoring system. The equipment now complements FMVs test and evaluation infrastructure for new surveillance techniques.

Multilateration locates an object by accurately computing the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of a signal emitted from an object and has initially been developed for military purposes. Multilateration is also called hyperbolic positioning and a minimum of four sensors is needed for efficient calculations.

Today multilateration is also widely applied in the civil aviation sector and its installation numbers are further on the rise. Due to its high flexibility and low investment costs it offers distinct advantages especially in areas where the application of conventional or Mode S radars is difficult or ineffective. The usage of MLAT not only provides significant economic benefits but quite often even outmatches the performance of SSR.

The FMV has been a COMSOFT customer for over ten years and we are delighted to provide another new product out of our surveillance portfolio to further advance Swedish air space surveillance.
