Denmark enhances airspace surveillance with COMSOFT Solutions Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) network

Comsoft Solutions successfully completes installation for Danish ANSP NAVIAIR, supporting international air traffic growth

- Karlsruhe, Germany.

The Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) of Denmark, NAVIAIR, has successfully completed installation and onsite testing of Comsoft Solutions Quadrant Sensors across Denmark, for high accuracy multilateration coverage enhancing surveillance and airspace safety while reducing operational costs.

Surveillance of Denmark’s 61,000 square km of airspace and approaches is now fully supported by state-of-the-art multilateration techniques, facilitated by Quadrant Sensors and Quadrant Transmitters at 30 locations including Ålborg, Århus, Billund, Copenhagen and Roskilde airports.

“With the installation of Comsoft Solutions Quadrant sensors we can enhance our air space surveillance and accuracy, both of which contribute to the safety and quality of our service. Quadrant will provide superior WAM and ADS-B surveillance for the Copenhagen Flight Information Region (FIR)”, said Henrik Tvilling Jensen, Project Manager, ATM Projects & Engineering at NAVIAIR.

International air traffic in Denmark has grown considerably in recent years and plays an important role in the country’s economic growth, employment and international trade. Copenhagen airport is the largest in the Nordics with over 265,000 flight movements in 2016, an increase of 4% on the previous year and 9% since 2013, highlighting the need to meet capacity demands without compromising on safety or efficiency.

“We are pleased to be supporting NAVIAIR with their goals for a more efficient airspace. The increasing demands of airspace users created the need for innovative solutions that keep safety a priority while reducing costs. The geometry of Quadrant Sensor positions and the high-precision time-stamping of received transponder messages enable accurate positions to be determined, providing considerable range over secondary radar, with better accuracy and higher update rates but at significantly lower costs.” says Comsoft Solutions Surveillance Business Unit Manager, Jörg Junge.
