CAAC Chooses FREQUENTIS to Equip Western China’s Largest Area Control Centre with its End-to-End IP ATM Communication Solution

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) recently contracted Frequentis AG to deliver its Voice Communication System VCS3020X for the main and backup system of Urumqi’s new Area Control Centre (ACC).

The scalability and reliability of the Frequentis technology, and its advanced end-to-end IP capabilities, constantly proves to be the perfect solution for the rapidly expanding ATM market in China. With Urumqi – one of the largest and most advanced ACCs in western China – Frequentis extends its broad customer base by another ACC. Soon almost every commercial flight in Chinese airspace will at one point be handled using Frequentis technology.

Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is located in China’s northwest and is the largest city in China's western interior. Its strong economic growth since the 1990s has had a major impact on the region’s air traffic infrastructure. Today the city serves as a major transport centre, with Urumqi Diwopu International Airport being a major hub for China Southern Airlines and a key airport for several domestic airlines. In 2013 it handled 15.4 million passengers, making it the 14th busiest airport in China.

In June 2014 the Urumqi air traffic authorities picked the Frequentis VCS3020X as the preferred platform for its new ACC. This will soon have more than 100 working positions, 550 radio links and 250 radio connections to reliably and safely manage a significant part of Chinese airspace. With its wide range of ED 137-compliant VoIP functionalities and well-known expandability, the 3020X platform ensures its capability for further growth.

The Frequentis VCS3020X is the leading end-to-end IP communication solution for Air Traffic Management globally. Its robust and proven architecture brings unrivalled scalability and functionality, and its wide array of workload sharing and networking capabilities makes it a critical element for any successful implementation of dynamic sectorisation, or Virtual Air Traffic Control. That’s why more than 25,000 air traffic controllers across the globe use and trust in Frequentis technology every day.
