Austrian Armed Forces goes with FREQUENTIS for modernising the air defence radio network

The ministry of defence awarded the contract for the modernisation of its 30-year-old defence radio network to an Austrian company group lead by Frequentis AG with headquarters in Vienna.
The air radio system comprises new equipment for fixed centres in St. Johann and Vienna, as well as a deployable centre comprising both fixed and deployable network radio sites. In addition to this, the modernisation of radio equipment at military air patches is also part of the contract The air radio system covers ground/ground voice communications as well as radio traffic with military aircraft and encrypted communication in the event of an air defence mission. The air radio system also covers the control of military aircraft used to assist search & rescue missions. Rohde & Schwarz Austria is responsible for the radio devices, the infrastructure is provided by Kapsch BusinessCom. Frequentis contributes the switch centres and the network, including new operator positions for military air traffic controllers - the Austrian high-tech company is world market leader in voice communications for air traffic control. The Austrian company group headed by Frequentis AG has won the project within the framework of a call for tender against strong foreign competitors. The contract lies in the core business activities of these companies and secures a large portion of added value and many Austrian jobs for the next couple of years. That the order has been awarded to Austrian companies also corresponds to the new government programme. The know-how and the systems of these new technologies are largely developed and produced in Austria, which ensures the armed forces accessibility to the technology even in crisis situations over the next decades. All involved Austrian companies offer state-of-the-art technologies and are market leaders in their respective segments. This project also is an important local reference that can support export activities of the participating companies. Christian Pegritz, Member of Frequentis Executive Board, underlines: "90 % of products and services provided by Frequentis are exported - we deliver defence customers in Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain and even Australia. To have a reference in the local market is therefore very important for our company."
