Estonia Embarks on Latest Electronic AIP Technology

Estonian Air Navigation Service (EANS) completed the commissioning of its central Aeronautical Information Management database, fully compliant to the latest EUROCONTROL AIXM 5 standard, in April 2011.

The Estonian system consummately integrates an electronic AIP solution which is fully in line with the EUROCONTROL AIP specification. The AIM solution has been supplied by the German AIM specialist COMSOFT in close cooperation with their industry partner Synclude.
The holistic design approach of the CADAS database introduces synergy effects by reducing data maintenance activities to the central aeronautical database only. Modifications in Estonias national database can be uploaded to the European Aeronautical Database (EAD) and are simultaneously adopted into the national AIP, making time consuming and error prone manual data handling obsolete.
In contrast to previous versions, the AIXM 5 standard is the first capable of processing static and dynamic data due to the newly incorporated temporality model. The uncompromising implementation of the AIXM 5 standard, the crucial precondition to efficiently cope with the demanding requirements of tomorrows Aeronautical Information Management and improved aeronautical data quality can be considered as the projecting peculiarities of the Estonian eAIP system.
Owing to the progressive and sophisticated conversion mechanism applied by the system the initial migration from AIXM 4.5 to AIXM 5 data format and corresponding population of the database were smooth and automated processes.
Evidently EANS backed the right horse already from the start, avoided one-way concepts based on legacy AIXM versions and pioneered for a future-proof and sustainable AIXM 5 solution. This year, yet again Estonian Air Navigation Services decided to contract COMSOFT for seamlessly augmenting the central aeronautical database with a Digital NOTAM application. This forward-looking project will transform Estonias current eAIP into a fully integrated AIM solution, far ahead of ICAOs AIS to AIM roadmap.
