The SESAR Iris project proposes the introduction of Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband-Safety for European continental flight operation, completely challenging current VHF based communications concepts. In some regions, the easy to implement space based VHF technology will bring significant changes to current flight routes. Communications networks are designed for long-term operation, and it is therefore essential to understand future developments and to choose the right architecture.
