The SESAR Young Scientist Award has been running since 2012 as a mechanism to recognise young scientists with high potential contributing to the scientific research in the field of ATM and aviation.
This webinar will give us a chance to touch base with some of the previous winners of the award, hear how their research has developed since winning the award and get their advice on how our industry can nurture, attract and retain young talent.
During this webinar, we will be hearing from Gianluca Di Flumeri, who won the award in 2018 for a ground-breaking method for evaluating controllers’ mental workload using brain activity measurements. He will elaborate on why researching the human factor in ATM is fundamental for the safety, efficiency and sustainability of aviation. Read more about Gianluca’s research.
We will also be hearing from our 2015 winner, Floris Herrema, who at the time was a EUROCONTROL trainee working on “Compression on final approach and Time Based Separation for Optimised Runway Delivery.” Floris’ work helps enhance the understanding of the behaviour of aircraft on final approach. It has a direct impact on the safety of time-based separation (TBS), as deployed at Heathrow Airport, as well as the RECAT 2 reduction in wake vortex separation between pairs of aircraft on final approach. Manuel Soler, winner of the 2013 award for his work on ‘Commercial Aircraft Trajectory Optimization based on Multiphase Mixed Integer Optimal Control’ will also join us in the webinar and explain how his research has evolved since winning the award.
