The German Meteorological Service Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) is a federal authority under the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing.
The DWD is divided into five Business Areas. Together with the President of the DWD, the heads of these five Business Areas form the Board of Directors, the President serving as Chairman of the Board.
The Business Areas Personnel and Business Administration, Technical Infrastructure, and Research and Development constitute internal service units.
Business Area Basic Services provides basic forecasts for areas of special interests, the Business Departments of DWD, and the German Military Geophysical Service and fulfils the task of issuing warnings of dangerous weather phenomena. Universities, scientific institutions, and private companies also obtain there meteorological information here.
With the broad spectrum of services from its six Business Departments, the Business Area Advisory and Forecasting Services is orientated towards the specific needs of various customer groups. As part of these Business Area the Aviation MET Department is responsible for the meteorological support of the civil aviation industry in Germany.
Safety in aviation is the result of precise meteorological measurements, analysis and forecasts. This is why we offer every pilot the latest and specific weather information. The meteorological safeguarding is our legal task.
