What will you do as an Air Traffic Controller?

In the tower or behind the radar, you guide air traffic from takeoff to landing, directing traffic high above. You monitor aircraft and weather conditions and instruct pilots on altitude, speed, course, and which runway to land on. You handle all kinds of aircraft simultaneously, so that's a lot of switching! Every day, air traffic controllers at LVNL ensure the safe takeoff and landing of hundreds of flights per day – both civil and military.

Here you will work as an Air Traffic Controller

As an air traffic controller, you can work at various locations in the Netherlands. Your placement is determined during your training. At LVNL, you can become an air traffic controller at either a civilian or military location. The work is different at each location.

If you work at a civilian location, you'll be based at Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam, Lelystad, Groningen (Eelde), or Maastricht (Beek). The radar department is also located at Schiphol-Oost (Area Control Centre and Approach).

If you're going to work at a military location, you'll be working at Leeuwarden, Woensdrecht, Eindhoven, Gilze-Rijen, De Kooy, Volkel, or Deelen. You might also work as an air traffic controller in the radar department at Schiphol-Oost, covering military airspace.

This is what you bring with you

To begin air traffic controller training, you need a level 4 vocational education (MBO), senior general secondary education (HAVO), pre-university education (VWO), higher professional education (HBO) (or a pre-university education (HBO) foundation course), or university diploma. You must also be at least 17 and no older than 30 years old before you begin the selection process. For the air traffic controller position, we are looking for specific personality traits and characteristics.

Everyone possesses a number of competencies necessary to become an air traffic controller, sometimes you might not even know you have them. You'll learn to further develop these qualities during your air traffic controller training. Among the competencies that are important for air traffic controller work are:

  • Stress resistant; 
  • Focus;
  • Spatial insight;
  • Sense of responsibility.

This is what we offer you

Air traffic controller training is demanding, and you'll receive a robust benefits package in return! From the start of your training, you'll receive a salary of €2,694 gross* per month, which increases throughout the program as you complete various components. After completing the program, your salary can increase to €13,846 gross* per month.

The opportunities to develop yourself further

In addition to your duties as an air traffic controller, you can contribute to expanding and disseminating knowledge in various areas within our organization. For example, you could become a team manager for a group of operational staff or progress to an operational supervisor.
