Seoul Airport supports its future growth with COMSOFT MLAT

COMSOFT, ATRiCS and Mopiens lead Seoul Gimpo International Airport to superior surveillance and an enhanced air situation picture

- Seoul, South Korea.

Seoul Regional Aviation Administration has moved a step closer to installation of cutting-edge Multilateration and Advanced Surface Movement Guidance (A-SMGCS) technology, to enable high performance and a three-dimensional image of air traffic at South Korea’s second largest international airport.

With exact position measurement of aircraft possible, separation gaps can be reduced making way for increased traffic volume in the region. Cost savings, fuel efficiencies and fewer passenger disruptions are further positive outcomes set to arise from installation of the innovative technology, delivered in a project led in partnership between COMSOFT, Germany based ATRiCS, and Seoul based solutions provider Mopiens.

South Korean capital city Seoul was East Asia’s most visited city in 2013 and MLAT and A-SMGCS will enable Seoul Gimpo Airport to support future air traffic increases as it remains the primary tourist destination for visitors to the country.

Assistant Director Seoul Regional Aviation Administration, Rak Seon Seong, said: “Factory acceptance, which took place at COMSOFT’s headquarters in Germany, was a smooth process, completed in good time, which gives us every confidence in a successful next step. We are now very much looking forward to installation of the new system which will vastly improve the throughput of air traffic to Seoul Gimpo International while highlighting our commitment to safety and efficiency in the region during its air traffic growth.”

Multilateration surveillance will be provided by COMSOFT's ultra-compact Quadrant sensor, with an unrivalled range exceeding 250 NM for ADS-B. Local Seoul based Mopiens is assisting with the installation and maintenance, while German company ATRiCS, the leading expert in Advanced Integrated Controller Working Positions (A-ICWP) and automated routing and guidance, is passing on its experience in providing well-known, user-friendly A-SMGCS solutions at airports.

COMSOFT’s easily mountable ADS-B ground vehicle transmitter MIDGET will also be provided to around 50 vehicles at the airport, in order to solve the surveillance of a demanding throughput of airport traffic on the ground. With the MIDGET’s ability to be mounted permanently or attached magnetically to any carrier at the location, it supports the tracking of ground-based objects by periodically broadcasting identity and position of the carrier-vehicle, broadcasting at a frequency of 1090 MHz.
