Jotron, a global leader in communication technology for land, sea, and air applications, has been awarded a public tender to supply and install its advanced voice, screen, and radar recording system across the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. The contract, awarded through NAV Portugal, will strengthen air traffic management capabilities to support safe, efficient operations in one of the world’s most strategically important airspaces.

Integrated voice, screen, and radar recording

Jotron will replace the existing recorder systems installed at the Oceanic Center, as well as those in towers across the Azores Islands, delivering advanced voice, screen, and radar recording for air traffic control operations. Ricochet is Jotron’s market-leading recording and replay system, designed for air traffic management and fully compliant with international standards. A total of 149 screens, along with more than 500 audio channels and radar data, will be recorded, providing a complete and synchronized operational overview. The turnkey solution is scheduled for installation and will be fully operational across the Azores by spring 2027.

Recording over 500 flights daily

NAV Portugal manages Portuguese airspace, including key North Atlantic routes. Jotron’s Ricochet systems will be installed at Santa Maria Oceanic Control Center, Ponta Delgada International Airport, Horta International Airport, and Flores Regional Airport. Santa Maria Oceanic Control Center handles more than 500 flights daily and manages air traffic across a vast area of the North Atlantic. Based on Santa Maria Island, this Flight Information Region is the largest in Europe and among the largest globally - connecting Europe with South and Central America.

“The Oceanic Air Traffic Management System at Santa Maria is critical for managing high-volume air traffic across the North Atlantic,” said Carlos Alvos, Director at NAV Portugal. - The fully integrated Ricochet Recorder platform will ensure synchronized capture of critical operational data, enable accurate analysis and enhance safety and decision-making.

“It is always a pleasure working with NAV Portugal,” said Christian Pindsle, International Sales Director, ATC & Coastal at Jotron. - Our partnership spans many years and is built on trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to operational excellence. Together, we contribute every day to safer journeys for airline passengers.
