Safe, efficient RTF and native English speakers

Communication is a shared responsibility

- Plymouth, U.K.

We are proud to share the results of our survey concerning the role of native English speakers in safe RTF communication.

We received 𝟭,𝟵𝟳𝟰 replies from pilots and controllers in 𝟭𝟭𝟮 countries.

In our opinion, aviation safety can be significantly improved if we can help native English speakers to become more empathetic, skilled communicators.

But we fully understand that there is resistance from some. This may be based on a lack of understanding (‘English is my first language – if you don’t understand me, that’s not my problem’) or it may be based on a feeling that this is a ‘nice idea’ but is not important enough to deserve our limited time and resources.

We believe both points of view are incorrect. Safe RTF communication is a shared responsibility and this is a real problem, affects many on a daily basis and often compromises safety.

Do you have any suggestions how we can create greater awareness about this issue?

We believe this is important work and hope that together we can make a difference.

The report is here.
