Additional sites added to weather camera portal

- Canberra, Australia.

Airservices Australia has added six new sites to its weather camera portal which allows pilots to view actual weather conditions at locations across the country.

The additional sites double the number of locations on the website with the initial six launched in May.

In order to provide the service, Airservices has teamed up with the Bureau of Meteorology to identify sites that have existing power, communication infrastructure and camera equipment.

Airservices Acting Chief Executive Officer Paul Logan said this phase of the project had focused on planning and delivering camera infrastructure to the new locations as Airservices expands the weather camera network.

“With the Bureau of Meteorology’s valuable assistance, we are pleased to be activating six new sites with more to come,” said Mr Logan.

The new locations added to the Airservices weather portal include Albany, Coffs Harbour, Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Mount Gambier and Wagga Wagga.

Already on the portal are camera views of weather at Archerfield, Kilmore Gap, Kingscote, Launceston, Norfolk Island and Parafield.

Airservices will continue to work with the Bureau of Meteorology and local airports to implement cameras at locations with existing infrastructure as well as planning for future new builds at safety critical locations.

“I want to thank all those who participated in the online survey to identify those locations that the aviation community feels would most benefit from up-to-date visual weather assessments,” said Mr Logan.

“The knowledge we obtained from the online survey continues to be valuable in both the planning and implementation of the weather camera infrastructure.”
