DFS awards Site Acceptance for Thales's Wide Area Multilateration System

Thales is delighted to announce that Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) The German air navigation service provider approved its final site acceptance for the Precision Approach Monitoring System for Frankfurt (PAM-FRA).
The system, built by Thales Air Systems & Electron Devices GmbH is a Wide Area Multilateration system. Which has already been analysed and tested in detail and will now be integrated within the ATM environment. It is planned to go operational by April 2013, after approval by the German Federal Supervisory Authority for Air Navigation Services (BAF).

The Thales WAM, PAM-FRA, is the first operational WAM system in Germany, and is designed specifically for highly congested environments. By delivering an almost five times higher update rate compared to conventional radar and industry standard systems for Wide Area Multilateration , the PAM-FRA will provide controllers with enhanced situational awareness, high precision and update interval secondary surveillance necessary to handle one of the most complex airspaces in the world.

Dieter Kaden, Chairman and CEO of DFS says: The WAM system enables DFS controllers at Frankfurt Airport to cope with the increasing air traffic demand without compromising safety aspects. This new surveillance sensor technology supplies enhanced surveillance data to controllers to ease their daily operational work. It provides more flexibility to feed aircraft into the approach area around Frankfurt Airport, which helps to fulfill the demand to reduce noise over densely populated areas. We are delighted to be one of the first worldwide customers having implemented this latest technology.

Dr. Henning Biebinger, Managing Director of Thales Air Systems & Electron Devices GmbH, says: This is a major milestone, adding a crucial capability to the Thales global surveillance solutions portfolio. We are proud to have been given the rewarding opportunity of supplying one of the worlds most recognised air traffic service providers with the latest and most advanced surveillance solution currently available on the market.
