Eurocontrol publishes think paper on Taxing Aviation

- Brussels, Belgium.

Using exclusive EUROCONTROL aviation data, the seventh in a series of thought-provoking Think Papers aims to contribute to the discussion by taking a comprehensive look at the impact of factors such as travel restrictions, GDP, passenger demand, fuel prices and airfares. It reaches some interesting conclusions, finding little evidence to show that taxing aviation per se directly lowers aviation emissions – and arguing that the best way to reduce aviation’s CO2 emissions is to promote decarbonisation measures, with any European tax to reduce emissions ideally ring-fenced to support investment in such initiatives.

Eamonn Brennan, EUROCONTROL Director General, said: “Aviation will recover in the years ahead and we need to ensure that the industry can decarbonize. There’s a strong push for the introduction of a tax on kerosene and this paper challenges the perception that taxation will directly solve the problem. Whatever policy is introduced should ensure the long-term competitiveness of aviation in Europe and encourage the delivery of global solutions to decarbonize aviation.”
