Raising the bar for aviation sustainability: Development for EUROCONTROL FlyingGreen has started!

- Brussels, Belgium.

EUROCONTROL has joined forces with 240 representatives from across the aviation sector to set up its flagship project for aviation sustainability: FlyingGreen. FlyingGreen is a strategic priority in EUROCONTROL’s corporate “Raising the Bar” programme, and is designed to support ECAC Member States and operational stakeholders in their decarbonisation efforts and climate change adaptations. The users of EUROCONTROL’s ‘green’ services –a integrated platform offering a NetZero toolkit, green fuel calculators and much more – come from across EUROCONTROL’s Member States and the aviation sector and will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of these services.

“EUROCONTROL’s goal with FlyingGreen is to ensure our future green services fully meet the needs of the industry. I am happy about the positive feedback so far and grateful to everyone who has offered their support in this undertaking. Our team is looking forward to collaborating closely with the entire community as we aim to deliver on our shared goal: decarbonising aviation.“
Marylin Bastin, Head of Aviation Sustainability at EUROCONTROL

At the inaugural meeting of the FlyingGreen Stakeholder Engagement and Consultation group in September, aviation stakeholders from ECAC Member States, EU institutions, air navigation service providers (ANSPs), airports, airspace users, lessors, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), energy producers and the finance industry attended the FlyingGreen presentation and told us how they would like to participate in the process. The 100+ stakeholders who asked to be consulted and involved will collaborate closely with EUROCONTROL and Sopra Steria on the design process and development to best accommodate specific requirements and expectations regarding the platform of services which are now being developed by Sopra Steria, one of Europe’s leading tech players and the winning entry for our public tender. FlyingGreen’s green services will be based on 4 pillars:

  • NetZero, which covers aviation's journey to achieve zero emissions by 2050. NetZero will represent a comprehensive toolkit providing data on direct and future emissions including what-if functionalities.
  • Fuelling Decarb, a centralised source of information to support the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable aviation. It includes a ‘green fuels’ calculator, a market check to determine the gap between production and need for sustainable aviation fuel or hydrogen fuel, an electricity estimator and a comprehensive resource hub on sustainable aviation fuel.
  • ClimAdapt, which aims to build resilience to climate change. ClimAdapt will host a high-level ECO assessment tool, guidance on climate change risk assessment and adaptation, and more.
  • DecarbFin, which seeks to accelerate aviation's access to climate finance through a package of customised services that stimulate funding opportunities.

Next steps

The first stakeholder workshops to discuss the prioritisation of services and to focus on user experience and interactive design will be organised for the 4 different pillars in Q1 2024.
