Sharing expertise on air traffic volatility and the impact of climate change on aviation

- Washington D.C, USA./ Paris. France.

On invitation by the American Air Traffic Control Association, FABEC will join the ATCA Annual Conference and Exposition on 2 October 2018 in Washington. FABEC will present insights about traffic volatility and the impact of climate change on aviation. A special focus will be to provide evidence, demonstrate the impact on day-to day operations and to show operational solutions. FABEC – in close cooperation with other European Functional Airspace Blocks – has been working for almost two years on both phenomena that have a tremendous impact on European aviation.

“We are thrilled that FABEC is joining us at ATCA Annual to lead the discussion on important issues affecting European airspace,” said ATCA President and CEO Peter F. Dumont. “Our partnership with FABEC at ATCA Annual and World ATM Congress is only getting stronger as we continue providing our attendees with the most cutting-edge thought leadership in air traffic management.”

Volatility in ATM: Evidence, challenges, solutions

External shocks, such as the crisis in Syria and the opening and closing of Ukrainian airspace, are having a significant impact on the stability of the aviation sector. In addition, there are also repercussions caused by new weather phenomena, the sudden launch or shutdown of city pairs by low-cost carriers, and changes to ATC service charges. Based on concrete case studies, FABEC will present different kinds of volatility, their impact on operational management for day-to-day business and will discuss ways of achieving predictability in the given framework.

Adverse weather and ATM: Consequences of climate change

Torrential rainfall, extreme thunderstorms, gale-force winds and quantities of snow not seen for decades: Climate change has reached Europe - and it is having a major impact on the air transport system. Airports have to be closed, flights cancelled or huge detours flown. FABEC will talk about concrete everyday examples of what is otherwise a theoretical discussion. Using facts, case studies and concrete operational initiatives, approaches to solutions will be presented.
