GPS monitoring of offshore traffic
Avinor are among the first in Europe to employ American GPS technology to strengthen monitoring of airspace extending to the Ekofisk, Sleipner and Heimdal oil fields.

Every year there are 160,000 passenger trips between Ekofisk and the mainland alone.
11 base stations
The system, called ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast), has been developed by American company Sensis Corporation. A total of three base stations are to be established on the mainland outside Stavanger and Florø in addition to eight on the oil installations at Ekofisk, Sleipner and Heimdal. ADS-B will provide more detailed information on where the helicopters are at any given time than traditional radar technology.
Ready in 2012
Project Manager Bjørn Hovland of Avinor says that the new installations are to be approved in April 2013. The cost of the project is NOK 6.5 million.
