The Story behind ANS Data

CANSO opens a new chapter

- Farnborough, U.K.

Every set of data tells a story. Use the right set of data in the right way and it can give you an insight into the state of an industry and fundamentally where it is going with respect to its goals. Having a global set of data makes the picture even fuller and in an industry of natural monopoly providers, such as ANS, common disclosure of performance data is especially important.

The CANSO ANS benchmarking initiative therefore has a central role to play as the source of a global view on ANS performance, providing members with an insight into the state of their industry as well as their performance within it.

Since the announcement of the Helios-CANSO partnership to write the 2014 ANS Performance Report, which currently covers productivity, cost-effectiveness, pricing, revenue and profitability, we have been working with CANSO and its Global Benchmarking Working Group to improve the value of the report to its ANSP members.

To give a fuller picture of ANS performance it is important to increase participation and broaden the report to include new performance areas. So the scope of this year’s data submission has been expanded to gain an insight into ANSP governance as well as some basic reporting on capital expenditure and fixed assets, which are areas of crucial importance to ANS provision.

Progress has been made towards the inclusion of safety and operational data, but this remains a priority for expansion in future years through greater coordination with other CANSO
working groups.

Project coordinator Kate Snow comments: “Data submission for this year has just opened and we are looking forward to working with CANSO and its members to maximise global participation and share the “story” of the ANS industry over the year."
