Indra equips the main Air Traffic Control Center in Georgia to absorb annual double-digit increases in traffic

Indra has completed the modernization of the main control center in Georgia, located in Tbilisi, where it has implemented a latest-generation air traffic management system to reinforce the center's capabilities and enable it to handle the double-digit increases in traffic that are currently being recorded.

Last year alone the number of flights that crossed the country's airspace increased by 13 percent. The European agency for the safety of air navigation, Eurocontrol, has indicated that this trend is set to continue in the coming years. The country is therefore witnessing an unprecedented growth in traffic.

To address this situation, the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, of which Sakaeronavigatsia is a dependent body, has embarked on the renewal of the country's air traffic management infrastructure. It is being assisted in this endeavor by Indra, one of the world's leading technology providers with experience in the implementation of proprietary air traffic systems in more than 160 countries.

The inauguration of the new Tbilisi control center represents a decisive step in this modernization. It is equipped with the most advanced tools developed by Indra to manage flights with maximum precision. The solution not only detects any conflicts between routes in advance to search for alternatives with the minimum possible impact on other flights, but also provides the center with complete capacity to react to unexpected situations, such as a strong storm requiring the diversion of all the air traffic in a particular area.

Furthermore, the high degree of task automation delivered by Indra's system reduces the workload of controllers, therefore enabling them to handle a larger number of flights. This means that Sakaeronavigatsia will be able to offer the highest levels of air safety and quality to airlines, while addressing the strong demand for its services, attracting more traffic and increasing its revenue.

As part of the same contract, Indra has also supplied a contingency center in Kutaisi, and under the aegis of previous contracts the company implemented a mode S secondary radar—the most accurate technology for identifying aircraft—and deployed a network of ADS-B and radio navigation systems to enable aircraft to determine their position and direction with great precision.

The ultimate goal pursued by Sakaeronavigatsia with the implementation of Indra's technology is the creation of a genuine single sky in Georgia to guarantee the completely smooth and uniform management of the entire airspace through the perfect coordination of all air operations.

To the inaugural ceremony was attended by Georgia’s Prime Minister, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the First Vice Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Dimitry Kumsishvili, the General Director of Sakaeronavigatsia, Gocha Mezvrishvili, the Regional Director of the European and North Atlantic Office of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Luis Fonseca de Almeida, the EUROCONTROL Director General, Eamonn Brennan, International Air Traffic Management Director of Indra, Gonzalo Gavin, and high officials representing the civil aviation sector and other state agencies.

Indra has also implemented its technology in control centers in neighboring countries. The centers in Rostov (Russia), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Trabzon (Turkey) all use Indra systems, ensuring seamless interoperability between all of them.
