Lockheed Martin Partners with FAA to Deliver Significant NextGen Milestone

The Federal Aviation Administration and Lockheed Martin have achieved a new milestone for NextGen the ongoing transformation of the National Airspace System. The En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) program, which replaces a 40-year-old system used at 20 FAA air traffic control centers, began operational use at six sites: Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland, Albuquerque, Minneapolis, and Denver. The centers in Salt Lake City and Seattle have been fully operational for more than a year.
The computer system used at these centers to guide airplanes flying at high altitude is considered the backbone of the nations airspace system. Air traffic controllers rely on the computer system to process flight and radar data, to deliver communications and to generate display data. Next steps include transitioning these initial sites to continuous operations once safety and technical checks are complete. ERAM provides the foundation for NextGen capabilities, which will increase capacity, improve efficiency and provide environmental benefits for passengers, the airlines, general aviation and other users of the aviation system.

ERAM is the central technology that enables the evolution from a ground-based system to a satellite-based system of air traffic management which will improve air travel for the American public, said John Mengucci, president of Lockheed Martins Information System & Global SolutionsCivil business. As we continue to support the FAA in the transition to this new, highly-complex system, our utmost priority is to ensure ERAM operates safely and efficiently- as it has been in Salt Lake City and Seattle.

Lockheed Martins IS&GS-Civil division serves various non-defense U.S. government agencies, international governments and regulated commercial industries. It is responsible for a wide array of information technology systems and services in areas such as transportation, health care, energy, information and cyber security, extreme environments, citizen protection and space exploration.
