Luciad builds Common Operational Picture for NextGen/SESAR

Luciad will be demonstrating its Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) client in the OGC Web Services Test Phase 7 (OWS-7) Aviation initiative, sponsored jointly by the FAA and EUROCONTROL.
The OWS-7 Aviation thread builds on the AIM thread of OWS-6 and will further develop and demonstrate the use of the Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) and the Weather Information Exchange Model (WXXM) in an OGC Web Services environment. Both the FAA and EUROCONTROL plan to use the AIXM and WXXM standards in their System Wide Information Management (SWIM)-related components of the US NextGen and EU SESAR programs. Within this scope, the Aviation thread will evaluate WXXM for the 4D Weather Data Cube, a key NextGen concept. Luciad is a longstanding leader in aeronautical information management and visualization, covering all aspects of modern ATM systems, from airspace management and trajectory support tools to airport and terminal operations. Luciads state-of-the art products are fully aligned with EUROCONTROL and FAA specifications; enabling advanced applications for high performance handling (decoding, encoding and editing) and visualization of AIXM 5 based aeronautical data and WXXM weather data. The OWS-7 Aviation thread focuses on investigating and demonstrating a variety of Web Services using AIXM and WXXM for applications and tools that support Airline Operations Centers and Flight Dispatch applications. In this thread, Luciad will demonstrate its support for AIXM 5.1 and WXXM data via an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) device running realistic aviation scenarios including bad weather conditions, runway surface contaminations, closures and Special Use Airspaces (SUAs). The LuciadMap-based EFB provides pilots with a dynamic Common Operational Picture with up-to-date aeronautical and meteorological information. It includes temporality, digital NOTAM/SNOWTAM handling, and OGC Web Feature Server integration. AIXM and WXXM have been jointly developed by the FAA and EUROCONTROL as global standards for the representation and exchange of aeronautical and weather information. The process and results of the OWS-7 Aviation thread will help both agencies in their efforts to increase industry adoption of AIXM and WXXM, and to support the operational use and validation of these emerging standards.
