Network Operations Portal receives prestigious Jane's ATC Award
As reported earlier today at a ceremony taking place the night before ATC Global 2011, EUROCONTROL received the Janes ATC Award for its Contribution to European Air Traffic Management with the Network Operations Portal, commonly known as the NOP.
The prestigious Janes ATC Global Awards reflect the air traffic control communitys commitment to efficient, safer and greener aviation. Nominations were reviewed by an experienced panel of judges from the FAA, ICAO, CANSO, IATA, IFATCA, EUROCONTROL and Janes Information Group.
The Network Operations Portal, launched in February 2009, was developed by EUROCONTROL to share a common view of the air traffic management situation across Europe with the whole aviation community. Its implementation addressed the need for a single entry point to ATM operations, aggregating tools and services previously scattered across the EUROCONTROL Agency under a single portal.
The NOP serves two main purposes: the monitoring of the real time status of traffic, airspace and air traffic flow and capacity management measures and the planning of pan-European operations on a collaborative way from the strategic to the tactical phases, hence optimising the use of available ATM capacity.
The NOP enables partners to anticipate or react more efficiently to any event. It provides a means for all actors, civil and military, to increase their respective knowledge of the situation from the strategic phase to real-time operations. Its extensive reporting facilities are a solid ground on which the future operations planning and the performance monitoring and reporting functions of the Network Manager will be built.
The challenge of such a portal was to provide a single information source and a single space for collaborative decision-making while supporting the needs of each user group. With its pan-European scope and its cross-industry reach, unique in Europe, the NOP was devised to serve the Single European Sky vision, said Jacques Dopagne, Director Network Management.
