New Airservices technical trainees take to the classroom

Airservices has this week welcomed 14 new trainees to a course designed to give them the skills to maintain Australias high-tech air traffic control equipment.
The trainees will complete a two-year Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering at TAFE NSWs Riverina Institute, leading to careers as technical officers with the nations air navigation service provider. They join 15 other students who in 2010 are entering the second year of the Airservices-funded tradespecific curriculum and training facility at the institutes Wagga Wagga Campus. Airservices spokesman Rob Walker said the trainees were benefitting from a unique partnership between TAFE, the Regional Development Board and the Wagga Wagga City Council. Were working together to offer regional training opportunities and to protect the future of Australias air navigation system at the same time. In 2010 our trainees come from regional and metropolitan areas in every state and territory except Tasmania and the ACT, Mr Walker said. Three additional trainees have already commenced work as Airservices technical officers in Brisbane, Perth, and Melbourne after completing their diplomas early. Their colleagues will learn about communications, surveillance, navigation aids and data systems and how to maintain safety-critical aviation equipment. The course also includes practical training and work experience on Airservices equipment including instrument landing systems, radars and other air navigation aids, Mr Walker said. Three highly-experienced instructors from Airservices partner with Riverina Institute teachers to help the trainees master the technology. Airservices will offer 18 training positions a year for the next three years as part of the regional skills development program.
