New high-tech airport control tower for Rockhampton

Airservices Australia today marked the start of construction of a new $6 million high-tech air traffic control tower for Rockhampton Airport.
The tower and related facilities will be built adjacent to Airservices existing complex and will replace the current tower which has been in use since 1961.

Airservices Chief Executive Officer, Greg Russell, said that the tower will be 21 metres tall and will be one of the first in Australia to be equipped with the latest electronic air traffic control technology.

The equipment display adopts the glass cockpit concept of modern jet aircraft, featuring customisable touch screens to provide information and allow controllers to perform operational
tasks.

The system combines flight and operational data, surveillance and voice communications into a single integrated, tower-specific layout.

Airservices is committed to using the latest technology to safely and efficiently manage passenger aircraft throughout Australia, Mr Russell said.

This project reflects our ongoing commitment to the development and implementation of infrastructure to make aviation safer and more efficient, particularly in regional Australia.

The tower will greatly enhance our services and ensure we are well placed to meet projected growth in regional air services and provide safe, efficient air traffic operations well into the future.

The tower will be a precast concrete structure with the concrete panels to be cast on site. The tower cabin will be built from structural steel assembled at ground level and lifted into place.

The cabin will incorporate specialised single pane glazing to ensure stringent optical, thermal and acoustic performance criteria are met. Each pane will be 50mm thick with the larger panes weighing several tonnes each.

The successful contractor is Badge Construction (SA) Pty Ltd and construction is due to be completed by June 2011. This will be followed by a three-month commissioning period.

Last month, Airservices began construction on a new air traffic control tower at Adelaide Airport.
