Rohde & Schwarz expands voice communications modernization program for Egyptian air traffic control

- Munich, Germany.

The CERTIUM Radio and CERTIUM VCS deployments are modernizing air traffic control communications in Egypt and replacing legacy systems with a full IP, cyber-secure architecture.

Rohde & Schwarz is a global leader in air traffic control (ATC) communications and is delivering an expanded end-to-end solution for the National Air Navigation Services (NANSC) in Egypt to replace aging radio equipment and upgrade the voice communications backbone for better security, availability and long-term operability.

The multi-phase program was initiated in March 2023, expanded in April 2025 and includes radio ground stations and a central voice communication system at multiple sites. Rohde & Schwarz is leading the complete implementation of the modernization program for secure and reliable communications infrastructure based on the CERTIUM Radio R&S Series5200 and CERTIUM VCS. The system covers comprehensive system design, installation, testing, training and ongoing technical support for full compliance with all operational and regulatory requirements.

The expanded program provides Egyptian National Air Navigation Services with a standards-based communications platform that eliminates aging ATC infrastructure challenges for operational continuity, lower lifecycle costs and easier upgrades with software updates to eliminate the need for costly hardware replacements. The complete turnkey implementation and long-term support from Rohde & Schwarz mean a smooth transition to a state-of-the-art operational baseline. Cybersecurity, availability and interoperability will all be significantly strengthened.

"Our engineering approach was developed in close coordination with NANSC and prioritizes reliable integration and long-term maintainability of ATC infrastructure," adds Sudarshan Avadhany, Sales Director for ATC Systems, MEA Region at Rohde & Schwarz. "The software-defined radios with ED-137C VoIP support, network segmentation and redundant interfaces ensure seamless connectivity with existing systems, maximize uptime and enable flexible software updates to reduce lifecycle risk."

"Rohde & Schwarz has demonstrated it can provide end-to-end solution value in this turnkey project while implementing the vision of the NANSC leadership team," adds Patrick Brodda, Managing Director, Rohde & Schwarz Emirates.

Capt. Ahab Azmy, Chairman of the National Air Navigation Services Company (NANSC), states: "NANSC welcomes the expansion of this modernization program. The comprehensive outfitting with new radio and voice systems strengthens our communications resilience, meets regulatory requirements and supports safe, continuous operations."
