Selex ES at World ATM Congress 2013

- Madrid, Spain

Selex ES, the strategic consolidation of Finmeccanica’s defence and security electronics businesses (SELEX Galileo, SELEX Elsag and SELEX Sistemi Integrati merged in January 2013), is exhibiting at the World ATM Congress (WAC) taking place at the IFEMA Conference and Exhibition centre in Madrid, Spain, from 12th to 14th February 2013.

From meteorological to surveillance sensors, from ground to en-route ATM systems, Selex ES offers a total capability portfolio for global Air Traffic Management. The company is the ideal technological partner for integrated airports, taking on responsibility for designing, producing, installing and setting up all required operational configurations.

The wide range of solutions offered by Selex ES has led to its ATC products and systems being selected by 150 countries, with its most recent contract making Selex ES the first supplier of ATC systems to China. The company will provide the Air Traffic Management Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (ATMB-CAAC) with two complete systems for air traffic control including a primary radar - a modern ATCR33-S enhanced- and a secondary radar - a full mode S SIR-S- which will equip airports in Beijing and Shanghai.

Internationally, Selex ES is firmly committed to defining new standards for air traffic management systems. This can be seen key programmes such as SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) and Coflight (programme among Italy, France and Switzerland). Subsidiary companies SELEX Systems Integration Inc. (navigation aids) and SELEX Systems Integration GmbH (weather surveillance) further reinforce the ability of Selex ES to provide global solutions in the ATM and airport domains.

Selex ES, located at Hall 9 stand number 1139, is displaying its Integrated Surface-En Route ATM system, simulating the one in operation in Kiev. Also on show are the Swim Box™, the MGS 100 Multi-mode Ground Station, the D100 series Multi-mode Digital Radio Equipment, the VRC VoIP Remote Control, the ONM100 Open Network Management System. At the same stand, the US subsidiary SELEX Systems Integration Inc. showcases the Model 3300 ADS-B/MLAT. Selex ES is also attending the SESAR Swim Demo, organised by the SESAR JU at WAC (Rooms N109 - N110).

Moreover, on 14th February Selex ES is presenting ARGUS (AiR Guidance and Surveillance) 3D results following the three year project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.

Improved Surface-En Route ATM demonstration system
The demonstrator platform shows, on a reduced scale, the most advanced state of Selex ES solutions for Ground and En Route ATM integration. Notably, the presented man-machine interaction is based on the system which was operational at the Kiev Air Control Centre during the European Football Championship. It has been integrated with further advanced functionalities which include up-to-date Mode-S solutions such as the ground monitoring of aircraft-derived data, the double-stack Controller Pilot Data Link Communication, the arrival management and the SESAR compliant A-SMGCS (Advanced – Surface movements and ground control system), including Departure Management and Departure Clearances, via Data Link. The solutions totally comply with heterogeneous operational requirements and air traffic management environments, ranging from large, nation-wide, en route area control centres to small approach control units.

The demonstrator interoperates with a remote client representing a generic ATM stakeholder interconnected through the Selex ES SWIM BOX™.

SWIM BOX™ is Selex ES solution based on open and modular architecture for System Wide Information Management (SWIM) enabling the seamless communication among diverse ATM applications through standardized interfaces.

MGS 100 Multi-mode Ground Station
Based on a software-defined radio technology, the MGS100 Multi-mode ground station meets all the challenging requirements for ground-air-ground communications, supporting present and future civil and military ATC applications. Different data link technologies can be provided in a unique, integrated and cost-effective approach. The MGS100 Multi-mode Ground Station exceeds ICAO and ETSI standards for AM-DSB mode for ATC ground-to-air voice communication systems

D100 series Multi-mode Digital Radio Equipment
The D100 radio series is a multi-mode digital radio family which can implement all communication standards foreseen by ICAO without modifying hardware and modules. It can also be easily configured for Voice networks with traditional analogue AM-DSB modulation.

Thanks to the implementation of the EUROCAE ED-137B standard VoIP protocol, Selex ES radio equipment can be directly interfaced to an IP network to transport voice.

VRC VoIP Remote Control
The VRC VoIP Remote Control operating position is the new Selex ES solution for Last Resort Radio Systems. It provides the same facilities of the legacy Selex ES remote controls with the advantages of a VoIP protocol, according to EUROCAE standards, and a powerful Human Machine Interface. The touch screen display provides the suitable commands to perform operating commands towards the D100 equipment.

ONM100 Open Network Management System
The ONM100 system is the Selex ES Network Management for ATC radio communication systems. Modern Network Management Systems, like the ONM100, support the reliability of mission critical ATC radio communication systems.

The Open Network Management system ONM100 assists problem solving, minimises non-operational time, enables easy reconfiguration of radio equipment to meet new operational needs and monitors system parameters and performance to maintain the required system Quality of Service (QoS).

Model 3300 ADS-B/MLAT
The Model 3300 is a high performance ADS-B ground station for en-route, terminal and airport surveillance applications that has been designed to support both domestic and international installations.

The Model 3300 is compliant with international minimum operating performance standards and capable of supporting both ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast) as well as Wide-Area Multilateration (WAM) installations with a straightforward configuration file change. When configured for the WAM application, the Model 3300 provides high performance and accurate all-weather surveillance for airport and wide area applications. It combines outstanding advanced sensors design and innovative target processing in a flexible and redundant architecture to identify co-operative detection of targets on the airport surface or on Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA)/ en route airspace.

Selex ES in SESAR – Swim Demo
SELEX ES has been involved in the SESAR programme since the very beginning by working on 93 projects aimed at the implementation of the Singe European Sky.

During World ATM Congress, Selex ES is taking part in the SESAR SWIM Demo with prototypes developed in various SESAR projects connected with other partner prototypes through the Selex ES SWIM nodes. More specifically, Selex ES is demonstrating the use within a SWIM environment of the IWIS (Improved Weather Information System), DMAN (Departure Manager), ACC, TWR and RMAN (Runway Manager) prototypes. Moreover, Selex ES is showing a mobile device (iPad) displaying the reception of Digital Notams and Flight Objects exchanged during the demonstration.
