Selex ES awarded EUR 27M to supply weather radars to Brazil

Selex ES, a Finmeccanica company, through its subsidiary SELEX Systems Integration GmbH, will supply meteorological radar systems to Brazil for a total value of about 27 million Euros.

The subsidiary SELEX Systems Integration GmbH, together with its Brazilian partner Engelétrica Sul, has been awarded a contract to supply nine METEOR 1600S weather radar systems to the Brazilian Centre for Monitoring and Warnings of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN), part of Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Due to its vast territory and large population, Brazil is vulnerable to a wide range of natural disasters such as landslides, violent storms, high winds, flooding, flash floods, lightning, droughts, fires, hail, storm surges, and acute episodes of air and water pollution, impacting millions of people each year.

The METEOR 1600S is a high-powered S-Band weather radar system designed to be employed in severe weather regions, where attenuation by intervening heavy rainfall impedes the precise measurement of precipitation at long ranges. By means of its innovative dual polarization feature, the METEOR 1600S can categorise different types of hydrometeor including drizzle, rain, hail and snow. More than 300 high-end METEOR product-line systems are in operation with leading meteorological service providers in over 60 countries.

The METEOR 1600S weather radar systems will support CEMADEN in achieving its mandate to establish an effective monitoring and early warning system for potential natural disasters using the most advanced equipment available.

Carlos Nobre, Secretary of Policies and Programs for Research and Development of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCT), declared the signing of this contract to be “an important breakthrough in a major Brazilian Government project to upgrade the response capability in face of extreme weather events”. Nobre also added“Eight of the nine radars will be installed in areas subject to disasters caused by the rain, in the cities of Natal, Maceió, Salvador, Almenara, São Francisco, Três Marias, Santa Tereza and Jaraguari. The other radar is being strategically positioned in Petrolina in the semi-arid area to generate essential information for agriculture and water resource management in the Northeast, as well as to monitor any extreme event, of course”.
