SELEX ES wins an 8 million Euro contract to supply ATC equipment to Vietnam

- Rome, Italy

Selex ES, a Finmeccanica company, has been awarded a contract worth around €8 million by the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) to develop the New Hanoi Air Traffic Control Centre.

The contract, which will last 19 months, will see Selex ES providing an Air Traffic Management automation system and associated systems. This will include the supply of an Area ControlCentre system (ACC) equipped with operator consoles, a simulator and a test and evaluation system. It will also include the complete automation of two control towers, one at Noi Bai (Hanoi International Airport) and one at Cat Bi.

The area control centre and the control towers will also be equipped with Selex ES’s AMAN/DMAN (Arrival MANager/Departure MANager) tool which will allow a better management of arrivals and departures and will help operators supply ATC services even when Vietnam’s air traffic density increases. The agreement also comprises eight video wall positions, installed into other VATM remote towers.

Selex ES will also provide services related to the installation, including the testing and setting up of the systems.

The proposed system architecture incorporates a high level of modularity, enabling it to meet the more advanced requirements of a modern ATM system. It is designed to provide ATC (Air Traffic Control) services continuously, 24hours/day, 365 days/year, with a high degree of reliability. Moreover, the system has the potential for further upgrade by the VATM in the framework of future projects.

The new air control centre system will be able to be easily integrated with Selex ES’s existing ATC systems that are already operational in the Noi Bai Airport, allowing the creation of a completely integrated air traffic control scenario.

Selex ES has been in Vietnam since the early 2000s, providing a number of primary and secondary radars for air traffic control, an area control centre installed in Hanoi and the relevant logistical support. Moreover, through its US subsidiary Selex Systems Integration Inc., Selex ES has also been the principal navaid supplier in Vietnam for more than a decade with operational systems at more than 20 sites nationwide. The US subsidiary has also established a regional technical services centre in Hanoi which supports these systems in Vietnam and other Selex ES navaids throughout the region.

This contract further grows Selex ES’s presence in the Asian region and may open further options in the near future. It also represents a success which further identifies Selex ES as one of the major players in the worldwide ATC business.
