Decoding the 10 priorities shaping the future of Europe’s skies

What will the future of Europe’s skies look like? And which innovations will help Europe’s air traffic management system evolve to meet the demands ahead?

The SESAR JU asked experts from across the SESAR community to help answer these questions in a new video series exploring 10 key priorities for the future of Europe’s air traffic management. In each video, an expert decodes one of the priorities, explaining what it means, why it matters and how it will be put into practice.

Known as the Strategic Deployment Objectives (SDOs), these priorities are set out in the European ATM Master Plan and identify the key actions to be rolled out between 2025 and 2035. They focus on SESAR Solutions that are ready for deployment, or expected to reach the required level of maturity by the end of 2026.

The 10 SDOs cover a wide range of innovations, from runway collision alerts and trajectory-based operations to innovative air mobility and cloud-based service delivery. They were prioritised for their potential to address key challenges facing European aviation, including climate impact, capacity and scalability, safety and the uptake of innovative air mobility.

The series comes at an important time. A selection of the SDOs will feature in the next phase of synchronised deployment through the second Common Project (CP2). A proposal for CP2 is being coordinated by the SESAR Joint Undertaking in consultation with stakeholders and will be handed over to the European Commission in October, paving the way for the next wave of synchronised deployment.
