STR-SpeechTech Launches Development of First Portuguese/English ATIS in Aviation Industry

- Victoria, Canada

In another first for STR-SpeechTech and for the aviation industry, STR is launching the development of a bilingual English/Portuguese ATIS. ATIS broadcasts (Automated Terminal Information Service) inform pilots of noncontrol
information including runways in use and conditions, notices to airmen, and weather information.

“STR is very excited to launch this initiative and to pursue this opportunity with Indra,” said Craig Dickson, President of STR-SpeechTech. “With the bilingual English and Portuguese ATIS, air traffic controllers and pilots have the option of having broadcasts in either language. This is of particular importance for smaller airports and for general aviation pilots in Brazil, where pilots may not be as fluent in aviation English.”

The requirement for Portuguese came about as STR won a contract in August 2013 with Indra to provide a bilingual StarCaster® ATIS System. This will be employed in Brazil’s new São Gonçalo do Amarante International Airport.
This will add to STR’s suite of bilingual ATIS products, which currently offers English, Spanish and French.
