ATC Training: eCoach introduces Remote Training Simulator

Avinor – the Norwegian ANSP - can now exercise radar based flight information training for remotely located airports without moving trainees from their regular workplace location.

With the eCoach ATC simulator solution from Norwegian Edda System AS, a training session can be managed with Trainee Controllers and Pseudo Pilots involved in the session located at multiple different sites.

Norway is a sparsely populated country with many airports at remote locations with more than 2000 km from the furthest south to the one furthest north. The installation Edda Systems have commissioned for Avinor now includes two AFIS airports in the north of Norway.

“With this remote training concept from Edda Systems we can streamline more of our training and potentially reduce time consumption and cost considerably” - says Mr. Sverre Skipenes, Project Manager at Avinor.

Remote training gives flexible use of the Training Simulator System and reduces impact on regular operation. Support resources like Pseudo Pilots (typically performed by Controllers) and Training Managers can be located different airports/ATCCs. The most significant advantage is however the eliminated need to move Trainee Controllers from their regular workplace location to a central training centre. Reduced travel costs and minimizing the hassle of changing shift lists and back-up shift lists.

The Edda Systems remote training concept is based on their standard eCoach Basic product where the nodes are interconnected over WAN. The Simulator designer and manager connects to a number of remote clients which can individually be set in Pseudo Pilot mode or ATC Trainee mode. One single training session can take place with trainees and pseudo pilots spread over a vast geographical area. Each client consists of a COTS PC with a monitor for simulated radar display and a touch Input Device for VCS functionality. The system implemented in Norway is also equipped with an interface module enabling use of the existing and operational Radar/ADS displays as HMI for the trainees.
