Air Traffic Control overlooked as career option by 1 in 4 jobseekers

NATS launches nationwide search for the next generation of Air Traffic Controllers, as survey finds one in four jobseekers (26%) haven’t had the career path suggested to them in any career conversations. 

The survey, launched today to mark the re-opening of NATS Trainee Air Traffic Controller scheme, found that over half of job seekers (55%) agree that an apprenticeship is an attractive offer due to a crowded job market.

The current state of the job market was highlighted as a concern, with 3 in 5 (59%) of those surveyed agreeing that they would love to look for a new role but feel the job market is too busy at the moment despite over half (53%) of workers saying they want to change careers.

The respondents highlighted that the perfect job would offer a six-figure salary (40%) and something different from the typical 9-to-5 office job (32%) and nearly three-quarters (72%) of those actively applying for jobs would love a role that makes a difference and contributes to society. 

The trainee apprenticeship scheme which opened today offers an opportunity for candidates to earn whilst they learn with a salary of £33,571, rising to £50,468- £56,247 after passing the scheme. Experienced controllers earn upwards of £100,000, with no degree needed.

Air traffic controllers play a critical role in keeping the skies safe, handling over 2.5 million flights each year, either from airport towers or one of NATS’ two radar control centres.

Claire Burton, Head of Talent Acquisition at NATS said: “Our trainee apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic option for those just starting out or wanting a career change. Our controllers come from all walks of life - you don’t need any specialist knowledge to become one however, a good grasp of problem-solving, teamworking skills and adaptably is important.”

Successful applicants will complete 12-15 months of initial training covering theory and simulator work, before being posted to an airport tower somewhere in the UK or to one of NATS’ radar control centres in Swanwick, Hampshire or Prestwick, Ayrshire. Once posted, trainees then gain hands-on experience under supervision until they become valid controllers.

Applicants don’t need any prior aviation knowledge – just five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (or Scottish National 5s Grade A-C), including English and Maths, and must be able to pass a medical and obtain security clearance.

Trainee controller tuition is delivered through an accredited Level 5 apprenticeship, and NATS offers a lump sum to help cover travel and medical assessment costs for candidates from lower income backgrounds or with caring responsibilities. NATS also offer a bursary payment to successful candidate from ethnic minority backgrounds.
